Premium Spices, Madagaskar

Since 2005, the smallholder cooperative Komam and Premium Spices have been working closely with PRONATEC. The cooperative is located in north-eastern Madagascar in the UNESCO listed Mananara Biosphere Reserve. More than 1000 farmers are affiliated to this cooperative by now, recognised by Slow Food and producing vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, pepper and pink pepper; under organic and Fair Trade conditions.

The cultivation of vanilla allows the harmonious coexistence of human beings and nature and prevents ecological over-exploitation. The traditional knowledge of the local population and the hot, humid rain forests in the north-east of Madagascar form the ideal basis for exquisite-tasting bourbon vanilla. The vanilla project is conducted by Interkooperation, Slowfood and the Madagascan National Agency for the Management of Protected Areas ANGAP (Association Nationale pour la Gestion des Aires Protégées).
